Yesterday, Gov. Gregoire signed into law landmark legislation making same sex marriage legal in Washington. Washington is now the seventh state where it is legal for same sex couples to wed. Also, Washington State is the first state to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as between one man and one woman.
The changes in Washington’s marriage laws will not go into effect until June 7th (90 day wait required). If enough signatures are collected for Referendum 73, the law will be put on hold until the November elections. This is a historic moment – let’s continue to be a leader in providing equal rights for same sex marriage!
